Fun for louis

Full-time adventurer Louis Cole (FunForLouis) has more than two million subscribers tuning in to watch his travel vlogs, which have taken him all across the world, from North Korea to Costa Rica.

Despite lots of exciting projects on the go, like the vast majority of us, Louis is now spending more time than ever working from home. We caught up with him to find out how he’s making the change from jet-setter to homebody.

Tell us about your daily routine when working from home?

After I wake up the first thing I do is make breakfast which is a smoothie and a black coffee, the perfect way to start the day! Recently I’ve started doing a half an hour yoga stretch in the morning. I’m usually sitting in front of a computer in my office most of the day, so yoga is important.

After lunch I try and get more fitness in – usually chin-ups and some other jobs around the house to keep active. One thing that I do without fail every single day is a 5-minute submersion in my ice bath. It’s great for boosting the immune system and also gets me pumped! It really helps me when I’m feeling demotivated and pushes me out of my comfort zone on a daily basis.

Brrr! Check out Louis’ ice bath video below to see him in action. Not for you? Read on to find out what other interesting WFH tips he recomends.

What’s your no.1 tip for staying motivated?

I found that recognising the time of day when I’m most productive has been really helpful. This saves me from forcing myself to be creative when I’m not feeling it. I get a lot done at night; there’s not much going on, no one is really around, there’s a lot less distraction! This is when I can focus and really motivate myself to finish up work. It’s all about building a realistic routine.

What’s the best thing about working from home?

Definitely the flexibility to do other things between working, like exercise and active jobs around the house. It’s nice to take breaks and do things like make lunch and hang out with my housemates for a bit.

What’s the worst thing about working from home?

I think the hardest thing is trying to maintain the home/work life divide and creating boundaries. The problem is I don’t have any boundaries! I work, socialise and have fun at the same time and there’s definitely a lot of distractions at home.

What advice do you have for Creators who are sharing a home workspace with friends, partners or family?

I think that being flexible is really important, not just for my own schedule but for my housemates as well. We realise that we all work in different ways and have different needs, like someone may have to make a lot of calls that day or need a quiet space to work. We compromise so that the house has a good working environment for everyone. It can be a challenge sometimes but we’re all really respectful so there aren’t any problems!

How do you look after your mental health when working from home?

I tend to put pressure on myself to achieve a lot which can be stressful. By allowing myself time to switch off when I need to recuperate really helps. I also try to get outside every day, even just for a little walk or being in the sun for five minutes.

What should you absolutely never do when trying to be productive when working from home?

The worst thing to do is force productivity when you’re not in the right headspace. This only leads to feelings of resentment and then you can start dreading working from home. Creating a realistic routine and finding balance is really important.

What’re your 3 top tips for a successful video call?

-Find a quiet space

-Ensure the lighting is good

-Prepare a cup of coffee beforehand!

What’s your go-to ‘let’s get this done’ track?

I don’t have one specific track but ‘Boasty’ by Wiley is a great song if I had to choose one.

We’re big fans of Boasty at Lickd HQ too! But, if you’re looking for some more chilled out listen-while-you-work music, check out our ready made working from home playlist, full of uplifting tunes to help you smash your to-do list.

Gonna try an ice bath? We want to hear about it! Get in touch with us @getlickd if Louis’ tips inspired you to do something different.
